The Nazca Lines

The final highlight of our tour of Peru took place during our 2-night stay at Ica where we were given the opportunity to take a flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines. These are located on a desert plateau called the Pampa which stretches from Ica in the north down to the town of Nazca, about 80 miles to the southeast.The lines can be divided into three distinct types: the biomorphs, the geometric shapes and the straight lines. The biomorphs are the drawings of birds, fish, animals and insects and have been shown to be the oldest of the lines and are probably the most famous. There are around 50 of them which makes them the least common type. They come in various sizes from just 25m all the way up to 275m. One characteristic that they have in common is that they have each been drawn using a single, uninterrupted line which never crosses itself. This seems quite deliberate and has led to theories that the lines were used as ceremonial walkways.This desert plateau has been called “the greatest scratch pad on earth” because it is littered with a staggering collection of geoglyphs - huge lines, shapes and drawings that were scratched onto the desert surface around two thousand years ago by the ancient Nazcans. There are wide ranging estimates as to exactly how old the lines are but they all agree that they were created over a long period of time - at least 500 years.
These biomorphs, however, are dwarfed by the sheer number and phenomenal size of the geometric shapes and the straight lines. There are around 300 geometric shapes and around 800 straight lines on the Pampa. The geometric shapes include enormous triangles, rectangles and trapeziums that are hundreds of metres wide and thousands of metres long and these huge shapes often cross or interconnect with each other for complex but so far unfathomable reasons. The straight lines are quite narrow but they are usually many miles long and perfectly straight with the longest being about 9 miles (15km).

Cross Campus Connectivity Baggage Basements and Tunnels to T2A

The Cross Campus Connectivity (CCC) study will investigate the constructability implications and options of the proposed Baggage Tunnels and Basements which are required to connect T2A to the wider Heathrow Campus (T1, T3, T4 and T5). The T1 baggage systems will remain operational until the T2A baggage systems are commissioned and fully functional.

During the briefing meeting held on the 12th May 2010 with Edgar Vila Pouca additional scope of works were identified as described below.

The study will use Siemens MP6 Baggage options as baseline this information will be required prior to commencement of the works in AutoCAD format.
The findings of the study will be compiled into a report and identify any further study requirements. This document will be issued in PDF format, printed colour copies of the report has been excluded from the fee detailed below.
It should be noted that the proposed new baggage systems design may need to be adjusted to facilitate construction of the basements and tunnel connections, this scope works is excluded from this study.
This scope of services makes limited provision for Technical Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement, including attending 2 workshops
Costing advice is excluded from this scope and will be provided by BAA and EC Harris

ASSUMPTIONS


  • All basements will be constructed as part of Phase 2 where construction will commence early 2015
  • Assume T1 demolition cuts lines as detailed in the T2A Phase2 constructability study (December 2009) Assume T1 Pier 3 aircraft stands can be decommissioned early 2015
  • Assume T1 – T4 baggage tunnel will be switched off for a period of time in order to make new connection to the T4 baggage interface basement, transfer bags will be moved by vehicle above ground, Airside road access will be required to serve T1 baggage facility
  • T3 / T5 – T1 baggage tunnel and basement chamber of the Eastern Interface Building (EIB) are existing (baggage system will be installed during phase2 works)

Cross Campus Connectivity Baggage Basements and Tunnels to T2A

  • It is assumed that the T1 baggage systems will remain operational until the T2A baggage systems are commissioned and fully functional. Specialist advice on the sensitivity of the baggage systems will be required to assist in resolving a structural solution for the constructability and phasing to this area.
  • It is assumed that a space factor will be added to the current baggage volumes for fire escapes, smoke extracts, safety zoning and sprinkler zone. There is a degree of risk in this assumption which will need to be addressed at a later phase of the design.
